Bill was an outstanding opening bat and wicket keeper, who played for 2 clubs in the area from 1946-47 through to 1958-59. In that period of time, he played in 6 Premierships, 5 with Murray South and 1 with Newmarket.
Some of Bill’s highlights were 11 centuries, including:
102 retired against Wodonga
116 against Wodonga in a Grand Final
133 against Kiwis
144 not out against East Albury
166 against Bandiana
107 against St Patrick’s where he carried his bat.
Bill represented ABCA at Country Week 10 times, with 4 as Captain and scored a
century. He also represented ABCA in over 20 O’Farrell Cup matches, being Captain at
least 6 times. After his retirement in 1959, Bill continued to be involved in cricket by umpiring for
the next 26 years. Included in his 26 years of umpiring is an unprecedented 22 First
Grade Grand Finals.
One of Bill’s great highlights was umpiring at the Sydney Cricket ground and umpiring for Country New South Wales in the England vs Southern Riverina fixture at the Albury Sports Ground. Bill was also curator at the Albury Sports Ground for 15 years.
